This Student Responded To A Homophobic Assignment With A 127-Page Defense Of Marriage Equality

Love is love.

If it’s between a man and a woman, if it’s between a man and another man, or between two women, it is still love. It is pure, and it does not regard gender, race, or religious differences.

Not everyone stands up to homophobes. But one brave high school junior did.

Meet Reddit user averagesmurf.

From a rural area in Missouri, he goes to a Catholic school where his Morality class teacher gave him a very homophobic assignment to complete.

About the assignment, he said, “The assignment is to write a ‘Summa Theologica’ style paper where you present a ‘moral dilemma,’ which is where you give the objections to church teaching and then the replies from the church. The exact words my teacher said in class were that you have to provide the church teaching to ‘show and prove that the church’s position is right.'”

I go to a Catholic high school, and they wanted me to write a paper on why gay marriage is “wrong and dangerous”, so instead I wrote this 127 page paper. from lgbt

However, before the topic was assigned, the teacher had an argument with the children about moral issues. The student said, “When the issue of ‘why is the church so against gay marriage’ came up, I asked for the little ‘talking ball’ and just started going for like 15 minutes on how the Bible isn’t a condemnation of homosexuality and in all ways affirms love rather than hate and how God doesn’t make mistakes when he makes us, we are who we are.”

The teacher’s counter argument was that same-sex marriage is not natural as they quoted  Aquinas. However, the student did not back off and defended his beliefs. He also got a lot of support from his classmates. But, in the next class, discussing this matter was forbidden as the teacher wanted to present an anti-gay video opposing homosexuality in Catholicism.

As it also seemed like a personal attack because the student was bisexual, living with his Catholic grandparents, he decided to fight back by writing a 127-page paper, titled “Gay Marriage is Fabulous.” It included his beliefs that same-sex marriages can be morally acceptable and that the Bible supports love, not hate.

Here’s an excerpt from the paper:

He also posted the entire assignment, to prove to those who called him a bluff. He said his favorite paragraph from the article was as follows:

“God created you, and he made no mistakes, God created me bisexual, and he made no mistakes, and he creates some people gay, and makes no mistakes: ‘For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected’ (1 Tim. 4.4-5).

Marriage is not between man and woman; marriage is between love and love. Love is not wrong, love is not a mistake, love is not an abomination, love is just love.”

It is very brave for him to stand up for himself. “All I wanted to do was say to kids, who feel crummy about themselves because some jackass tells them it’s wrong to be themselves, that they’re loved, and they don’t have to hate who they are,” he said.

Although we aren’t sure if he’s going to get an A for that, we really appreciate his effort to promote love and acceptance.
