And while we have been seeing that change in recent years, it is still not at all enough. After all, everyone deserves to have themselves represented in the media rather than just white people.
In my opinion, if shows like F.R.I.E.N.D.S had people of color in it, it could have been so much better. (Granted, I still love that show.) While this dream might never come true, one artist had re-imagined our favorite shows with people of color.
And I don’t know about you, but I think they look awesome. It all started when Julio heard about the recent #BoycottStarWarsVII hashtag on Twitter.
I don’t know shit about Star Wars, but I know racism when it’s slapping us in the inter-webs,
So I took the liberty (cos [sic] I mean, white people be doing that shit when it comes to making POC characters into white characters) to include us POC into my favorite shows and sitcoms.
White artists are given the opportunity to fail, because then you learn from those mistakes. It’s human nature to get things wrong, but if there’s no space for us to even try to experiment, then the pressure is bigger.
I really want to push folks to think beyond these white characters. There is so much history in our communities and we’ve got stories for days, for years.
