The world is a dark and scary place.

You might be afraid of creepy, crawly monsters in the dark, but they’re nothing compared to the monsters of real life. These two, for example, are the parents of thirteen children, ranging from 2 years old to 29 years old.

Why are they monsters? Because they tortured their children, kept them malnourished and chained to their beds. The house was filthy and the children, and seven of the children were adults and they were unrecognisable as such.

Riverside County Sheriff’s Department

This horrific incident only came to light when a seventeen-year-old girl escaped from a window and called 911 on a cell phone.

After they failed to explain the chains, the two parents, David Allen Turpin and Louise Anna Turpin, were arrested on torture and child endangerment charges. The bail for each was set at $9 million each.

Perris Police Chief Greg Fellows was “shocked” when he found out that there were seven adults. He stated:

“If you can imagine adults who appear that they’re children because they’re so malnourished, and they’re not being fed, and they’re living in these filthy, dirty conditions….I would call that torture,”

They were fed and given water the moment they were freed.

And are now currently held under observation at the Corona Regional Medical Center. The CEO of the Center, Mark Uffer, stated:

“It’s hard to think of them as adults when you see them. Because they’re so small, it’s clear that they are malnourished.”

Elizabeth Jane Flores is the sister of the mother, and she was “shocked” when she heard what happened. She said that she didn’t see signs of abuse, but that the husband would make her uncomfortable.

“If I went to get in the shower he would come in while I was in there and watch me, and it was like a joke. He never touched me or anything. I was young, I was scared, I was in Texas where I knew nobody. I had no family. I was treated like one of the kids, kind of. So I had rules… Now that I’m an adult and I look back I see things that I didn’t see then.

“They were always funny and private anyway, even before they ever had children. If it had been like two years ago that she’d cut us off then we might think wow, you know, something’s not right. But this had been going on even before they had children.”

Elizabeth wants to reach out to her sister and wants to see the children.

“I want her to know that she’s still my blood and I love her. I don’t agree with what she did and her actions [have] made the whole family suffer. And I want to her know that I’m praying for her salvation, and that we do love her,

But mainly I want to reach out to the kids, I want them to know that [for] years we begged to Skype them, we begged to see them. The whole family have asked for 20 years to be able to Skype them. And I want them to know that they do have family… whether they know us or not, that love them.”

Of course, now people are asking, how something like this lasted as long as it did?

What about school? Neighbours? Friends?

As it happens, the father ran a private school where he is listed as the principal and the students were their own children. The neighbours described them as vampires, jokingly, saying they only came out at night and were very pale.

The situation has made many people uncomfortable.

It is unclear exactly how long the children were in the position they were in.

But the doctors stated that they were in a “prolonged” state of malnourishment and entrapment. Hopefully these monsters will face the full wrath of the justice system, and that they never see the light of day again.
