Mom’s Facebook Post Shows Why We Should Always Lead by Example

One thing parents are always told is that they should lead by example.

Children absorb what they see like sponges, and the lessons parents can teach through actions alone are often invaluable. This has been shown in the most positive way by a mum on Facebook who has gone viral after showing what a little bit of kindness can do.

Brittney Johnson took her 4-year-old daughter Payton out shopping for bathing suits, and the worldwide hit came when she was trying some on. In the corner, she saw her daughter try on a suit she had just disregarded. Even though it didn’t fit, she still happily looked at her reflection and asked a question that went on to make a lot of people smile.

“Wow, I just love cheetah print! I think I look beautiful! Do you think I look beautiful too?!”

The question and the happiness and positivity warmed Brittney’s heart, and she has since commented on just how loving her daughter is.

“She is polite at the order counter because she hears me when I’m polite to strangers everywhere. She gives compliments to people she doesn’t know because she loves how it feels when she hears them.” She said.

What was striking to Brittney was when she realized why her daughter was so confident. “It hit me that she only says what she hears,” She later put on Facebook.

“What she sees. I tell her that she is beautiful every single day. She is kind walking through the mall because I tell her she is kind everywhere else.”

Since then, the story has gained a mass of responses, all commenting on how beautiful the story is. One user said “What a great lesson for us all!! Thanks for reminding us our little ones are always listening and learning from the people in their lives. You’re a great mom.”

Brittney has been ‘overwhelmed’ by the response she has gotten and says she hopes it will make people feel more positive and happier within themselves.

She said, “I tell Payton the truth and I tell her she’s beautiful, and that’s why she trusts me and is confident. I have learned … in teaching her about her own body, how I should see mine. Women’s bodies are wonderful. They are strong and powerful and deserve to feel like it.”

This story is an important reminder to all women and parents out there- body positivity is something you can get behind at any age and kids should be made to feel like they are beautiful every day. It really is true – a little kindness will go a very long way.
