Parenting is one of the most difficult and underappreciated responsibilities a human being can have.

You guide and help grow a human being. From their perspective on life to their entire worldview, as a parent, you impact everything. Whether that child is a success or a failure is dependent entirely on how you teach them to behave.

So obviously, this responsibility comes with major decisions. One such mother made the decision to write an open letter of Don’ts to her child. While it did go viral, it did become a topic of controversy. I’ll discuss them all!

It started with this.

#1 Do not apologise.

As you can see, the reason why it turned into a controversy is because of her rules. Many parents saw them as her raising an insolent, arrogant child. When people bump into each other, it’s because neither saw what was happening. To not apologise is to teach her not to take responsibility.

#2 Do not give explanations.

Toni Hammer, the mother, wishes to teach her child this so she’s confident in her decisions. Other people, however, think that it’s just teaching her to be incapable of accepting criticism or growing as a person.

#3 Eat whatever and don’t style your hair for other people.

Social norms are hard on everyone. There are many people who order things they don’t want because it’s more acceptable than what they do want. The mother wanted to avoid this.

#4 Do not wear anything you don’t want to.

Like many of her points, it doesn’t just apply to daughters. Especially the one about being open to cry. Boys are told from a very young age that being emotional is being a failure at who they are. They need to be taught that it’s okay to cry.

#5 Don’t be polite because it’s your life.

This one spurred a lot of conflicting opinions. The mother is essentially telling her child to live her life the way she wants, but other parents are quick to point out that the child needs input of other people so she doesn’t do wrong. That being polite is an essential part of being human.
