12 Disney Movies That Have Horrifying Origin Stories

Everyone dies essentially.

We are all familiar with Disney movies as most of us grew up with them. Moreover, we are also familiar with the dark origin stories behind a few of them. Disney does not do true justice to these old tales, some fantasy while some of them very real. However, I am sure we’d rather watch the Disney interpretations rather than know the real stories behind.

 

1. Cinderella

The original Cinderella fairy tale is horrifying. When neither of her stepsisters can fit into the glass slipper, one of them cuts off her toe while the other her heel. Afterwards, Cinderella got her revenge after all by ordering her magical birds to peck out their eyes. She was not very reluctant about killing her step-mother, all things considered.

2. Sleeping Beauty

In Giambattista Basile’s 1634 work, the prince is unable to wake Sleeping Beauty from her slumber. Therefore he does the obvious thing. He presumably rapes her and then has the audacity to leave. At any rate, Sleeping Beauty becomes pregnant with twins. They are born while she is still unconscious and one of the twin sucks on her finger drawing out the splinter, consequently waking her up.

3. Beauty and the Beast

In the original story written by Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve, The Beast allows Belle to visit her sisters whenever she desired. Her sisters soon turned to jealousy after seeing her covered in riches. Hence, they forced Belle to stay a little while longer, hoping the Beast will eventually devour her as a result.

4. Snow White

The Disney interpretation is quite similar to the original story by The Brothers Grimm except the small fact that the witch does not die so easily. She is punished for trying to poison Snow White by making her dance on heated iron.

5. The Little Mermaid

In the original fairy tale written by The Grimm Brothers, the prince eventually falls in love with a different girl, consequently breaking the Little Mermaid’s heart. At that moment, she could either slay the prince and let his blood drip on her feet, and as a result, she would be able to become a mermaid. However, she is unable to kill him, and instead casts herself into the ocean, transforming into sea foam.

6. Mulan

Mulan is based on a real story, mentioned in Hua Mulan’s poem. The enemy keeps Mulan alive on one condition that she stay with him. She is soon able to escape. However, she is greeted with her Father’s death, so she kills herself after saying her last words. “I’m a woman, I survived the war, and I have done enough. Now I want to be with my father.”

7. Rapunzel

This story might be have the happiest ending on this list, although it is a bit grim. The gist of it is that the prince is tricked by the witch and ends up losing his eyes. He wastes quite a long time in the woods but eventually finds Rapunzel. He is greeted with her magical tears and two children. The tears give him back his sight, and they live happily ever after.

8. Pocahontas

Pocahontas was undeniably a real woman, and her life was not as shown in the movie. She seemed to hate John Smith who had lied about everything to her. She was also kidnapped at one time and then held hostage for a year. Moreover, she was stripped of her identity and renamed Rebecca and finally at the age of 21, she was free from the cruel world.

9. Hercules

The movie Hercules is based on Greek myths, which we all know are not really family friendly. Hercules was born by Zeus tricking his mother. He was messed up as a child and executed his music tutor. However, he soon wedded Megara but promptly went insane and killed all of his family.

10. The Hunchback of Notre Dame

In Victor Hugo’s novel, Quasimodo fails to save Esmeralda and watches as she’s hanged. Then Quasimodo soon goes to her grave, where he stays until he starves. Consequently years later, their graves are opened and their skeletons soon turn to dust.

11. Pinocchio

The original story was written by Carlo Collodi, Pinocchio is written as an asshole. Since birth, he is shown to be a brat and consequently, behaved pretty badly. So one day, a cat and a fox hang him and watch him die because of his bad behavior.

12. The Jungle Book

In Rudyard Kipling’s book, after killing the murderous tiger Shere Khan, Mowgli soon discovers that his biological parents have been imprisoned as a result of his actions. However, with the help of a few select animals, Mowgli destroy’s the village.
